In previous article Overview of Backup and Recovery
we explained basics of Backup and recovery process in HANA.
In this article, we will do a comparison between HANA backup options.
There are 3 Backup Options in HANA:
- Backint API (via third-party backup tools)
- Storage snapshots
You can back up data and logs to the file system.Data backups can be triggered using
- SAP HANA cockpit
- SAP HANA studio
- SQL commands
- DBA cockpit (scheduling)
Log backups are written automatically to the file system
Backint API (via third-party backup tools)
SAP HANA provides an API where third-party backup tools can be connected. This is called Backint API.
A third-party backup tool communicates with an SAP HANA database through the Backint for SAP HANA interface.
As an alternative to data backups to the file system or to Backint, we can use snapshots (data only)Steps to create storage snapshots
- First, trigger the creation of an internal data snapshot in SAP HANA using SAP HANA studio or SQL commands ("prepare database")
- Using a storage tool or similar, you can create a snapshot of the whole data area
- Confirm the snapshot as successful using SAP HANA studio or SQL commands. This is necessary to include the snapshot in SAP HANA's backup catalog
