How to access 3rd Party OData Service in SAP Web IDE

In previous articles Prerequisite for SAPUI5 and Fiori, What is SAPUI5?, What is Fiori?, we explained the basics of SAPUI5 and Fiori. We also talked about SAP Web IDE and how to get started with that.

SAP Web IDE is used to extend or create an SAPUI5/Fiori application. Let us assume that the application is consuming an OData service coming from a 3rd party (non-SAP) system.

In this article, we will explain how you can configure SAP Web IDE to use these OData Service.

Northwind OData service

Here we will use Northwind OData service as an example. This is a publicly available test service and contains good sample data.
The OData service URL is http://services.odata.org/V4/Northwind/Northwind.svc/

Steps to configure OData Service for SAP Web IDE

  1. Create destination in SAP Cloud Platform
  2. Access the OData in SAP Web IDE using Service URL (Destination)
SAP Web IDE

Step 1: Create Destination in SAP Cloud Platform

Open your SAP Cloud Platform account. If you do not have a SAP Cloud Platform account, refer to the article Get Free Access to SAP Cloud Platform and create one.

In the SAP Cloud Platform Cockpit, as shown below, click on the “Destinations” menu item on the left. Then click on “New Destination”.
SAP Web IDE

Create a new destination in the following way:
Parameter Value
Name NorthwindODataService
Type HTTP
Description Northwind OData Service
URL http://services.odata.org
Proxy Type Internet
Cloud Connector version 2
Authentication NoAuthentication

Add following additional properties:
Parameter Value
WebIDEEnabled true
WebIDESystem Northwind
WebIDEUsage odata_gen

Finally the destination should look like below
SAP Web IDE

Note: To know more about Destination in SAP Cloud Platform, refer to the article How to Create Destination in SAP Cloud Platform

Step 2: Access the OData in SAP Web IDE using Service URL

Now if you want to create a SAP Fiori application using the SAP Fiori Starter template you have to do the following at step 3 of the creation process:
  • Select Service URL
  • Select the destination we have created, in this case it’s Northwind OData Service
  • Copy here the path to the service, in this case “/V3/northwind/northwind.svc
  • Click on the little “Play” button
  • Click on Next and proceed with project creation

This is the way we access and consume OData Service in Web IDE. If you still have any dout, post that in the comment below.

If you have any doubt or question, please post that in comment section.

I added the new destination in the hana cloud cockpit and it is successfully connected. When I go to choose a service URL the “choose a system to connect to the required service” field is blank. How can I fix this?
