Associate level certification Vs Professional level certification
It is extremely important to understand this before going into further details.
SAP Certifications are categorized into 2 levels.
Associate level certification:
- Associate level certification
- Professional level certification
Requires formal SAP training or broad fundamental knowledge of SAP solutions and the successful acquisition of broad proficiency.
Professional level certification:
Requires proven project experience, business process knowledge, and a more detailed understanding of SAP solutions.
How Do I know if a certification belongs to Associate or Professional level?
, you can check the details of certification.
C_HANAIMP151 is an Associate level certification. This can be confirmed at https://training.sap.com
What are the eligibility and prerequisites to appear for SAP Certification in India?
For Associate level certification, there are 2 options
Appear for SAP Certification based on SAP training
- Appear for SAP Certification based on SAP training
- Appear for SAP Certification based on SAP work experience
This is the straight forward but costly approach. You can attend official SAP trainings corresponding to the certifications and then appear for actual certification. The training details can be found at https://training.sap.com

Appear for SAP Certification based on SAP work experience
To appear for SAP certification (Associate level) without attending any SAP course you need to fulfill the following criteria:
- Minimum 1-3 years of SAP implementation experience with minimum of 6 months experience in the module and version in which you wish to take up the certification.
- The last 1 year should be with your present employer
- Your present employer should be a CUSTOMER or PARTNER of SAP
- For HANA certification aspirants : 1 year of Implementation experience on HANA is mandatory
I am a Freelancer. Am I eligible for SAP HANA Certification?
No. Unfortunately in India, this is not possible.
If you are not employed in an organization (SAP Customer or Partner), you are not eligible to appear for SAP Certification. You need to be employed with SAP Customer or Partner at least for 1 year.
Why SAP has imposed these limitation?
The eligibility criteria specified by SAP (mentioned above) make it difficult or impossible for freelancers to get certified in India.
There is a reason behind it. The IP protection legislation in India does not effectively hinder the distribution of training materials and exam questions, and SAP exams are therefore potentially exposed to being widely distributed.
If they do not take additional measures to hinder this, it will be unfair advantage to individuals who are willing to pay for exam questions rather than study for exams. It will also put customers at risk of being exposed to certified individuals who do not have sufficient skills to undertake the work required.
By validating project experience in their eligibility process, SAP is introducing a safety measure to protect their customers from the consequences of hiring or engaging supposedly “certified” individuals who have not actually attained their certification by fair means.
