Nanjing is known as a prominent cultural city of China with a total land area 2548 square miles. There are approx. 8.23 million people live in the city who travel by 10,000 taxis, 7000 buses and 1 million private cars. With the increase in number of vehicles running throughout the city network, the traffic volume is growing enormously which creates frequent traffic congestions. The city is facing difficulties to deal with this traffic problem.
To handle the current traffic situation and deal with the future scenarios, Nanjing has designed an intelligent traffic management system in a collaboration with SAP.
SAP and Nanjing are working together to cope with the traffic volume by measuring it.
To fetch the traffic data, sensors are placed in taxis and buses whereas RFID(Radio Frequency Identification) chips are embedded in travel cards which are automatically communicating with traffic cameras. With this, the city would be able to estimate the traffic pattern. Approximately 100 million records are generated per day from sensor data which are transformed into sensible information by using advanced analytical algorithm on SAP HANA. All these information are finally indexed and represented on a huge digital map. Processing sensor in real time could be done by leveraging in-memory computing capability of SAP HANA. As a result, it has been possible to measure real time traffic movement patterns and predict future possibilities of traffic congestions.
